NomaScope / Museum Cinema / Taxi Driver, 1976 – 50th Anniversary!

Cult films accompanied by a short introduction and admission to the exhibition Noma Bar: Look Again

Over the years, Noma Bar has created posters for some of cinema’s most iconic and celebrated films. NomaScope, a film series presented in conjunction with the exhibition Noma Bar: Look Again, features films for which Bar created reinterpretations of their original posters, now on view in the exhibition.

In his illustrations, Bar has a remarkable ability to distill a complex idea into a sharp, lucid image. Often, it is precisely the negative space—what is not drawn—that contains an additional layer of meaning, transforming what we thought we saw at first glance. Bringing the films together with the images Bar created for them reveals how an entire cinematic world—its characters, ideas, and tensions—can be distilled into a concise and surprising visual interpretation.

Each screening will be preceded by a short introduction by Yuval Saar, curator of the exhibition.

Taxi Driver
50th Anniversary!

USA, 1976 | Director: Martin Scorsese | Cast: Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster | 114 min., English with Hebrew subtitles

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Taxi Driver, widely regarded as one of the great masterpieces of cinema. Martin Scorsese presents a dark portrait of Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a Vietnam War veteran suffering from insomnia who works nights as a taxi driver on the streets of New York. The city he encounters night after night is plagued by crime, violence, and alienation.

Driven by loneliness and frustration, Bickle embarks on a personal crusade against the city’s moral decay—a mission that gradually pushes him beyond the edge. Through Michael Chapman’s expressionistic cinematography and Bernard Herrmann’s commanding score, Scorsese transforms 1970s New York into a dark and violent arena, while De Niro’s chilling performance turns Travis Bickle into one of the most iconic characters in film history.
